"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that really matter"
~Martin Luther King
Alice has lived in this box for 6 years. Never having been out of this box, living in 6 years of her own filth. No sunlight except what manages to creep through the slats in the boards and the chicken wire. No human contact emotionally or physically... EVER. Her screams were heard by a passerby who thought it was a squealing pig. She is desperate to be saved...
This is the story of a beautiful six year old, chocolate brown Pitbull named Alice in Toombs County, GA.
Yes, we are talking about the south, the deep south where them "good ol' boys" have their own idea of what the law is and how it should be upheld. Where the judges and police officers (and I use that term loosely) change the laws at will to suit their needs. Most of the time, they just plain seem to "forget" what the laws are because they are just too damn lazy to do anything about the problem.
Most southern states seem to fly under the radar to the rest of the country... until something so unimaginable happens that suddenly now the whole world knows about it. Such was the case a year ago when a sweet docile dog at the Forrest City , AR animal control was mauled to death when it was left unattended for 12 hours with several other dogs in a kennel on Memorial Weekend. It was a blood bath. The news of this reached 21 other countries and supporters from around the world stepped up to help create change in the small southern town of Forrest City. Well, now it seems it's time that Toombs County, Georgia be put on the map for its unspeakable negligence for animal rights. Enter... Alice.

Alice was discovered on Saturday January 29th, 2011 when a passerby heard what she thought was a pig squealing. Upon closer inspection what she discovered was a beautiful chocolate brown female Pitbull, living, or rather just existing, in what can only be described as a box. The box was approximately 5 X 8 X 4, made of old weathered boards and chicken wire. Alice had lived in this box for 6 years. Living in her own filth. Never was there any human contact emotionally or physically. She had been deprived of ALL her natural senses. She was only fed bread and an occasional "honey bun" that were thrown to her from the top of the box through the chicken wire and onto the floor that was caked with 6 years of feces and urine, from there she had to eat and sleep everyday of her miserable existence. Her water bucket looked more like a bucket filled with raw sewage than water. It had a wire handle on it like paint buckets do. To the wire handle, a rope was tied and fed through the chicken wire in the roof of her box so, if the bucket ever fell over they could pull on the rope to upright the bucket with out ever having to set foot in her filthy box or to give Alice any attention what so ever. Alice was just a breeding machine to them, the "owners", and nothing more. You see, dog fighting in the south is very common (recall Michael Vick) and not unheard of to just breed Pitbulls to sell or to fight them themselves. It was very apparent that Alice has had several litters. She has never been vetted or vaccinated or medically treated for any of the common diseases in the south such as heart worm or round worms. THIS is Alice's existence. I say "existence" for that is what it is. She has no life, just purely... existing.

Scott Bennett, the Director of Southern Comfort Animal Rescue Inc, located the owner of Alice and told Scott the reason she was in the box and had been her ENTIRE life was because, "She was one of them mean kind of dogs" ie:Pitbull. She had been in this miserable existence since she was a puppy, deprived of every conceivable natural sense as if she were not self aware of her own suffering. CLEARLY she is self aware and KNOWS her suffering as was proof when the passerby herd Alice squealing like a pig in her loneliness, hunger and misery.
What has followed was a series of frustrating events. Scott revisited the property with a sheriff who was horrified by what he saw but, his superior was not. Nor did the animal care and control care much for Alices condition and Scott was in fact told that the AC officer also fed his own dogs scrap food thrown onto the ground. When Scott presented his findings to the Judge/Chief Magistrate, he was advised that he would "throw out" any charges of animal cruelty. Apparently, Judge Matheson also claims that there are "no laws that require a rabies vaccination in the state of Ga". Really? Thats news to me. When concerned citizens called sheriff Alvie Lee Kight, Jr to express their concerns about Alice the response was, "stuff's gettin blowed up". That sounds like the real educated intelligence that the south is famous for. Does it LOOK like Alices conditions were exaggerated in anyway? Hmmm...??? What appears "to be blowed up" to you Mr Kight?
Since Scott's visit to the "owners" of Alice who were told that her living conditions must improve or charges will be brought against them for animal abuse, she was moved to a chain link enclosure with an Igloo. Though this is an improvement, it is not enough. She still has no bedding, no food bowls, no medical care or vetting and she is still very very isolated and alone.
Here is adorable sweet happy Alice when Scott took a brief VIDEO
As you can see, she is so happy to have any kind of human attention she dances in her pen hoping to have companionship.
Southern Comfort Animal Rescue (SoCo) has created a PETITION on behalf of Alice. Not only do they want to see her owners charged with animal cruelty for the atrocious way that they treated the dog for six agonizing years, but they want the dog to be removed from their "care".
Ultimately, they want the dog to be released to their rescue - to be properly vetted and cared for. SoCo is hoping that everyone reading this article will sign the petition, send letters to county officials, and share this story with others.
Though Alice is "just one dog", speaking up on her behalf can help to change the mindset of this entire area. If Alice's situation can be remedied - it will be more than a win for her. It will be a win on behalf of animal welfare in Georgia.
The following information is to be utilized to help Alice and other dogs like her.
Concerned individuals are encouraged to write to the
Magistrate Court of Toombs County,
Chief Magistrate John Matheson,
147 Jerry Ave., Lyons, GA 30435,
or phone 912-526-8984. Fax 912-526-8985.
Contact Sheriff Alvie Lee Kight, Jr. at 912-526-6778.
SoCo has indicated that Mr. Eaves is an animal lover himself - letters to Mr. Eaves should express the general public's desire for a change of animal welfare law in this area.
You may find SoCo's Facebook fan page
HERE . There you will also be able to find all the most current and up to date info on Alice as it becomes available.
A form letter will be provided by SoCo for concerned individuals that want to reach out to officials. If you are able to access Facebook, please visit the SoCo profile to view and copy the form letter located in the NOTES tab.
I hope that everyone will share this story. Alice has suffered long enough. What she has endured is unimaginable. No living creature should ever be treated in this manner.
A special THANK YOU to Scott Bennett the Director of SoCo who is passionately leading the fight to save the life of Alice and the future welfare of all dogs in Toombs County, GA. Thank you Scott and to everyone helping you both in Georgia and around the world through Facebook.
"A nation can be judged by the way they treat their animals"
~Ghandi
God bless you sweet dear, Alice. The world is watching you now. We love you sweet baby girl.

Why doesn't someone just go take this dog? What are we waiting for? You know the owners don't give a shit and wouldn't contact the police if someone took her. Why are we playing by the rules when no one else is? This dogs life depends on help....immediate help!
ReplyDeletePraying and praying that this sweet dog get out of hell..this is truly one of the saddest stories i have heard. Tugs at my heart strings. I hope this sweetheart finds love, that is what i am going to pray for when i lay my head on the pillow tonight, for Alice and all the other innocent souls.
ReplyDeletewish that guy would have just taken her in the first place and not said anything, but I am hoping really hard that he and SoCal can get her away from those people She could have been in a safe, clean, loving place by now instead in a place that does not care about her or any other animal. I hope people don't let go of this and put Toombs County on the map for ignorance and cruelty just like Cadiz, OH was raked over the coals for what they were doing to dogs at their animal shelter. As for that magistrate, he shouldn't BE a magistrate with his kind of attitude! Hang in there, Alice, the world is coming to get you!!
ReplyDeleteI would call "Mr. Kight" myself but I would probably be subsequently arrested. I live in Louisiana, almost as deep south as you can get, and as a volunteer at the local animal control I can tell you that even here there are animal rights laws. Georgia has no excuse not to have any, and it sounds like their entire sheriff's department needs to be cleaned up.
ReplyDeletePoor little Alice, once again through people's pure ignorance an animal takes the brunt of unimaginable cruelty. Can anyone really be so thick and stupid as to think that this is acceptable. Perhaps her so called owner ought to live in her conditions for a while and receive the same treatment that Alice has, I wonder if he would have a change of heart then, though I very much doubt it because where there is no brain there surely can't be any sorrow or remorse. Lets hope that someone goes and takes the dog and gives her a better life. The justice sysem is appalling and I think the people supposedly upholding it are an absolute joke. They too ought to be forced to live in the same conditions as this poor baby. Bless you Alice, someone will save you soon. xxx
ReplyDeletewhy is it that we are still so ignorant that we would allow an innocent animal to live in conditions in some ways equivalent to concentration camps. humans (who are guilty of crimes against humanity) live in much better conditions than this poor baby girl. why are we still so stupid to give no consideration to the fact that they get hungry, they feel pain, cold, they feel lonliness, and they are as vulnerable to the devastating psychological consequences of being so confined. only, they don't realize that we KNOW BETTER. they don't know that their life should be different, that what they must endure is morally, ethically, and legally wrong - "cruel and unusual" punishment for WHAT?? WHAT CRIME??? they do not see that we are their enemy, their torturers, and that it is within our hands, it is our responsibility to provide them the life they are supposed to have. and they will still turn and offer a wagging tail and a lick on the face for just a kind pet on the head, no matter how evil the human that offers that pat on the head.
ReplyDelete@Stacy it would be theft... And it would actually cause a reverse reaction and make it harder to keep her away from her "owners"
ReplyDeleteI am a southerner, some of the things I'm not surprised. Rabies vax is Law in most (if not all) of the south.. But rarely enforced. There used to be a HUGE problem with rabid dogs (about 40 years ago), but the law (and those that obey it) has really knocked that down.
Most dogs in the south rarely go to the vet.. It is usually at the bottom of the "to do" list. If a dog (or cat) does go it is to get "fixed" (very very rare among males and only females whose owners have gotten tired of puppies) which is usually the only chance the vet has to inform them.
Most of it is ignorance. Commercials are needed that are informative and funny (not sappy like the ASPCA, people just mute them). Maybe someone reading this could help with that.
Yeah sure the dog is mean...
ReplyDeleteYou can't just go get her because people are watching and if someone just goes to get her then they will just get ANOTHER dog and do the same! And you might get shot too! A lot of these places are out in the country and it makes it VERY hard to sneak in and off the property. And they can shoot you if you are on their property. Because they need to do this the legal way so that animal welfare laws are changed!
ReplyDeleteNo one can go stealing every dog who is chained! And no one does- You have to change the laws and this county and possibly the law enforcement and their "dull" brains so that ALL animals here do not have to suffer!
If you steal them all..which is impossible..how does that change anything? Its like stealing dogs from a puppy store or from a mill.. It doesn't change anything... It just stalls it for a short time.
The law needs to change! And somehow Alice will be freed but it has to be by changing things.
Otherwise they can just go get another dog and this rescue could be blamed if she goes missing! And then it will be hard to change the laws if there is then no dog leading the change!
I live in NW Georgia and I know that, although there are many, many animal lovers here, there are also idiots. However, there are the same kind of idiots everywhere. The south has a bad reputation as being "slow" or "uneducated". The truth is there are ignorant people here, and all across the world that see dogs like Alice as just that; a dog. Something disposable and easy to replace. I will send emails and write letters, praying that the laws can be changed. It is a long process, but there is hope. Please, do not go stealing the dog because most people do have guns, including me. That is my right. I do not want to see anyone hurt, human or animal. And just so you know, GA does require rabies shots! That was just an out and out lie. I'm so sick over this poor girl, I hope that together, she can be set free.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone asked the owner if he would give Alice up?
ReplyDeletePoor girl... This is NOT right. She needs to be freed!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is so touching, and upsetting. I just recently lost my dog due to old age, and I cannot express how much love she got and I still think it wasn't enough. I love her so much and would have never thought twice about abusing her or taking her away from life. Dogs love attention, they love freedom, and I think that Alice deserves that more than anything. No dog should ever be shunned away like that, every dog deserves to live a beautiful life. I know here in Canada (where I live) its not like that, I know that if a dog was being mistreated animal control will come right away. FREE ALICE and let her live the life EVERY DOG deserves to live..
ReplyDeleteThis is disgusting! These people should be ashamed of themselves!! PLEASE let's help this beautiful animal get set free. I will personally find her a home. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
ReplyDelete@Stacy I couldn't agree more. Just go in a take the dog.
ReplyDeleteThere are idiots everywhere. My daughter was living in Wisconsin. Her roommates dad asked them to take care of a cat for him for a while then decided he didn't want her after all and wouldn't come get her. They then learned she was pregnant. My daughter took care of her and her 4 kittens till they could be weaned but their apartment mngr said they had to get rid of them in 7 days or lose their home (no animals allowed.) She tried to find homes but couldn't. The Humane Soc. was going to charge her $50 per cat to turn them in. She had no money-she lives on a small amount of disability. She took them to the police station and said she found them by the road hoping the police would take them to the shelter. They discovered she had lied and ended up charging her $100 per cat (she's still paying!) It's pretty sad that they would rather charge someone so much money for trying to see to the safety of some animals when it would have been so easy for her to take the cats out to the woods and leave them! I'll sign the petition for Alice because I believe that EVERY animal deserves to have the best life possible.
ReplyDeleteSickening! She is such a gorgeous girl and looks oh so sweet. :(
ReplyDeleteThis is sickening and makes me cry. Any kind of cruelty is unacceptable. Animals are like children all they ask for is love, affection and a safe place to call home. Animals are not mean unless they are mistreated and created that way by ignorant people. Alice’s owners need to be fined for animal cruelty and she needs to be taken away them and given a home that she deserves.
ReplyDeleteI live in Scotland and we have some horrific abuse cases but I have to say, I've never come across anything like this. These people sound like they're straight out of the movie Deliverance.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe that people in positions of authority would or could be so ignorant and uneducated as to allow this abuse to continue or to even think it's acceptable.
Alice's case will do absolute wonders for Georgia's tourist trade - NOT.
Personally, I would be straight in there and take Alice - what exactly are they going to do? Is someone taking her food and water and spending some time with her now? That at least would be some small step.
And I can't find the letters to send - can someone point me in the right direction please?
I am in Scotland and help with support to UK rescues and I've heard some horrific cases of abuse - but nothing so drawn out as this.
ReplyDeleteDear Lord, these people sound like they're straight out of the movie Deliverance.
I cannot believe that people in positions of authority and power can be so uneducated and ignorant to believe this type of sustained abuse is acceptable and to allow it to continue.
Alice's story will do wonders for Georgia's tourist trade - NOT. The only reason I'd want to visit Georgia now is to either get Alice out of this hell hole or wreak vengeance on the poor excuses for humanity that have cause her this suffering and allowed it to continue. I wouldn't visit for any other reason.
Personally, I would just steam in there and take Alice away - what exactly are these people going to do?
Is someone taking her food and water and spending some time with her every day now? That at least would be some small step towards relieving this poor girl's suffering.
And can anyone point me in the right direction for the template letters to send - I don't trust myself no to be insulting if I write my own. I can't find the letters on SoCo's page.
@Staffy Club The form letter is listed under NOTES on SoCo's Facebook page titled "Letter to Toombs Co"
ReplyDelete@Stacy If I was any where near there I would've taken the dog already and given it a good home. I have 3 dog and one being a rescue. I can't beieve this is still going on in this day and age and I am horrified that it is still happening.
ReplyDeleteI just called the sheriff's office and spoke with a very pleasant dispatch person..and according to them Alice is very well taken care of. I say pictures don't lie. Look at those eyes, they are so sad. Look at the floor. I asked if the dog had been to the vet they could not answer that question. I encourage you to call Mr Matheson to try and get this situation corrected. Call the Sheriff Kight during the day. (The number at the sheriff's after hours is their 911) This dog needs some sort of protection. What we don't want to happen is what happened to Abel in Camden SC. Abel is currently at Noah's Ark Rescue. The laws in the south do not protect those without a voice. Take the time to write letters or call don't assume someone else will.
ReplyDeleteOh my god, I just can't understand how people can be so cruel. This made me cry my eyes out. Poor sweet Alice, these people should be prosecuted fir what they've done. In the Uk we have the RSPCA (royal society of prevention to cruelty to animals) who would have come and taken her away immediately. Is there nothing like that in the Us? Thanks for sharing this- i'll deffo be writing some emails. Xxx
ReplyDelete@Corte Inglesa
ReplyDeleteHi Kath,
Thanks so much for emails. Yes, we have a number of animal rights organizations here in the U.S and since the posting of this blog they have ALL been contacted as well as media coverage. There are legal defense teams in place and thousands of letters, phone calls and donations have been made for this sweet girl. The whole world is watching Alice and her outcome. Im confident she will be saved if all goes the way the rescue group involved and the legal team, have planned. Let's all pray that nothing happens to her in the mean time while people work to change the laws on Animal cruelty and abuse in Toombs County.

I agree -why doesn't someone just go at night & steal her? I sincerely doubt those idiots will go to the lengths & court costs it takes to press charges. And that's IF they find the person who takes her. I doubt any animal lovers will turn them in. Someone from out of state take her. God bless the person that does get her out of that hell for it doesn't appear any "law" enforcement are going to do the "law" abiding thing!
ReplyDeleteAll of those officials should be locked in a box and fed table scraps. Now we know what Georgia is really like--full of idiotic, cruel people who don't care about anything but themselves. That's great publicity for the state. Where's the Governor? Surely he's read about this. It's on Jane Velez-Mitchell's show right now--the whole country's going to know about the horrible people from the State of Georgia.
ReplyDeleteThis is unacceptable anywhere in the United States. In my home town Rochester,New York its a felony to have a dog under these conditions we had a pit found in a trash bin and the owner a lady went to jail.
ReplyDeleteRabies shots are needed because they go into a national data base so I don't know what that judge was talking about. Alice needs a family that will love and care for her and tend to her needs.
As a Georgian and a dog lover/rescuer, let me just say that I have been following Alice's story closely and am appalled by it. Not all Georgians are backwoods or ghetto people that don't care about dogs. In fact I am a vegan b/c I love ALL animals so much and I work with dog rescues. The people that are allowing Alice's "owners" to get away with this are the same people who defended Mike Vick. Their argument is "it's just a dog, and there are people out there who are abused/murdered/starved/whatever." Well, that may be true, and it is wrong but it DOES NOT mean that it is okay to treat a dog this way just b/c some people are treated worse. That is such illogical reasoning, but apparently it makes sense to some very ignorant people. I'm glad I am educated and even more, I'm glad I have a heart.
ReplyDeleteJust saw this story, what was the outcome?
ReplyDeleteHi Kay! Honestly I don't know. I had followed the situation for many months and it seemed to carry on for so long without any changes.
DeleteI will however, look into it again to see what, if any news.
Thank you for reading.
god all mighty...i am going to be sick...i have more animal friends then people friends and that is just fine with me!!!
ReplyDeleteDecember 15, 2013- What is the update status of this dog now???
ReplyDeleteEddie, I don't have any further information on her. =(
